Enjoy sunrise in Lamar Valley or Hayden Valley while searching for iconic wolves, grizzly bears, and bison with your experienced naturalist guide. We'll wrap up around late-morning, when wildlife activity slows down.

This half-day tour offers the flexibility and customization of our full-day options, and fits better into tight itineraries and budgets.

An early-morning departure gives you the best possible chance to see harder-to-spot wildlife species such as wolves and bears. Our guides are in communication with the local wildlife watcher network, and we will use the latest information about wildlife activity as well as our expertise to determine the best viewing locations for the morning.

Most of the very best wildlife watching in Yellowstone is had from the roadside. Therefore, we usually spend the prime wildlife watching hours of early morning near the road corridor, sometimes with short walks to access better viewing locations and to escape the crowds. We will wrap up our tour mid-morning as the wildlife activity slows down, so you can continue on with your own explorations of Yellowstone.

Many thanks for a great day
Duncan MacKellar, June 2024
Many thanks to Cooper (our guide) and Yellowstone Wildlife Profiles for a fantastic day in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone National Park. Cooper has great knowledge and passion for Yellowstone wildlife, and did a great job in finding wolves and bears (our priorities), and other interesting animals (e.g., coyote pups, elk calves, and badger kits)! When the opportunities arose, Cooper notably focused on interesting behavior (e.g., we watched and discussed at length two young elk that crossed in front of a wolf den and their subsequent defensive behavior, and the captivating struggles and risks of elk adults and a calf repeatedly attempting to cross the Lamar River). Cooper also shared many interesting stories of his encounters and observations of animal behavior in Yellowstone over the years. Cooper had very good equipment, quickly setting up separate scopes for the both of us, while using another to find additional wildlife in the area. He also moved to new spots throughout the Lamar at the appropriate time. Many thanks Cooper for the wonderful introduction and tips on spotting and viewing Yellowstone wildlife, and for Brad Bulin's book on The Grand Lady of Yellowstone!
Highlight of Our Trip

We had an amazing tour with Yellowstone Wildlife Profiles! Josh was an incredible guide and was able to answer all of our questions about both wildlife and the park in general. We saw wolves, bears, a moose, and more! We also learned a ton about the different animals and their habitat. This was definitely the highlight of our trip! I would recommend this tour to anyone!
Awesome experience with a knowledgeable guide

What an awesome experience. Josh is very knowledgeable, professional, and provided a great experience. With his help we saw black bear, grizzly bears, golden eagle, bald eagle, coyotes, mule deer, moose, elk, pronghorn, wolves, and multiple herds of bison. If you are on the fence about booking a trip, do it, it is money well spent. Brad was a great help with booking a very personal trip to suit our needs.

Wildlife Code of Ethics

We believe in a strict code of ethics. The animals of Yellowstone face enormous pressure from the sheer number of visitors coming every day to observe them. The park has set forth certain rules that we will adhere to. Mainly, we must not disturb wildlife and we should maintain a good distance to ensure that the animals can carry on with their day-to-day lives and that we stay safe. The current rules include 100 yards from bears, wolves, and cougars (mountain lions) and at least 25 yards from everything else. We appreciate your understanding and so will the animals.
