Great Way to See Yellowstone Wildlife

As always, we had a wonderful time with Brad in April. Among the many animals we saw were wolves, moose, elk, deer, pronghorn, and many bison with a few "red dogs" among them. The highlight of the day was getting to watch an otter in the Lamar River who came right up onto the bank below us. We were able to watch it roll over onto it's back and roll around. We probably were able to watch it for 15 or 20 minutes. Getting to see the sow bear in her den was pretty special also. Watching and identifying different waterfowl was an added bonus. We have been in several classes with Carolyn as well. They are both excellent wildlife interpreters! If you go with one of them or someone from their company, you are guaranteed to learn a lot about Yellowstone wildlife while you are seeing it. Thanks, Brad!

“If you want to see Yellowstone with a true expert then Brad is your guide. I was on a wolf trek of a lifetime this past March and Brad did not disappoint. He was highly skilled with spotting wolves, discussing their behavior, habitat and the work within Yellowstone to follow these marvelous animals. Not just wolves mind you but we saw all the other glorious creatures in Yellowstone: bison, ravens, golden eagles, pronghorn, a mama bear peeking out of her den with cubs, elk, bighorn sheep, coyotes, red fox and mountain goat. We saw a fresh kill and analyzed and old one. Fabulous learning experience. Brad knows every inch of that park and has an eagle eye to match. He provided superb equipment for us to use for viewing. My advice, go with Brad and read his book ‘The Grand Lady of Yellowstone.'”

Shauna Baron saw her first wild wolf while volunteering for the Yellowstone Wolf Project in 1996, just one year after the reintroduction, and has been working to protect wolves and wild places ever since. For over 25 years, she has focused her career on outdoor education and wildlife conservation, including work as a biologist for the USFWS Red Wolf Recovery Program in North Carolina, a forest carnivore researcher for the University of Vermont, and as a volunteer at the Colorado based Mission:Wolf program. Having a B.S. in Biology as well as a Master’s Degree in Science Education has led her to not only to being a published author but also, to developing nature therapy programs for disabled veterans, inner-city youth and autistic groups.  Recently, she was the editor for the Yellowstone Wolf Charts and Genealogy publications as well as launching Yellowstone Trip Planning, an online venue for visitors wanting to make the most of their time vacationing in Yellowstone.  When Shauna isn’t in the field guiding or helping others plan their trips, she can be found with a scope to her eye or a book on her lap.

Carolyn Bulin has been watching wolves in Yellowstone since 2001, when she watched the Druid Peak pack successfully hunt an elk in Lamar Valley – a stunning introduction to watching wild wolves! She holds a bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management with emphases in ecology and cultural anthropology from Northern Michigan University. Carolyn’s specialties include multi-day seminars on wolf research and management, day hiking and backpacking courses, and single-day private tours catered to the interests of each group. Carolyn’s volunteer experience in Yellowstone includes snow tracking surveys for the Yellowstone Cougar Project, carcass surveys with the grizzly bear research team, and assisting with trapping ravens and fitting them with GPS harnesses for research. As a certified trainer of interpretive guides through the National Association of Interpretation, she also teaches in-depth classes that share the art and skill of naturalist guiding. During her free time, Carolyn enjoys exploring the GYE with her husband and two small children.

“I went on a Yellowstone Wildlife Profiles Wolf Watching Tour in March, guided by Brad. The whole trip was fabulous. Brad is a great naturalist who has an almost uncanny ability to spot wildlife. Brad would stop the car and point out eagles, pronghorns, elk, and of course the ubiquitous bison. We even saw fox, moose and a mountain goat among others. Every day, we would go out before dawn to arrive deep in Yellowstone as the sun came up. The beautiful scenery and variety of wildlife was astonishing. While no one can make sure the wolves will actually show themselves, we saw wolves every day. It is an incomparable feeling to hear wolf howls in the clean, clear air of early morning against a backdrop of snow- covered mountains. Excellent binoculars were provided to everyone in the group, and Brad quickly set up sighting scopes that gave us a great close view of the animals. Our trip included interesting and informative lectures with local wildlife experts. I highly recommend Yellowstone Wildlife Profiles and Brad.”

We had a great tour with Yellowstone Wildlife Profiles! Our fun and knowledgeable guide, Josh, led us to see lots of animals: wolves, pronghorn, great horned owl, bison, elk, bald eagles, and more. Josh provided detailed insights on park history, the animals (how the bulls “guard” the females and the purpose of “wallowing”; the history of wolves in the park), and geology (what causes the geothermal spring colors). His enthusiasm and wide-ranging knowledge brought out the curiosity and wonder in our jet-lagged 14 and 11 year old children, who quickly decided that Yellowstone was awesome! We might have seen *some* of the animals after getting lost on our own, but a great guided tour let the whole family enjoy the views and take in the wildlife in a much more informed way. YWP also provided us with high end scopes/binoculars for viewing. It was a terrific start on our first day in the park and prepared us for the rest of our visit. Highly recommend!

This experience was definitely worth it. We had Josh as our guide, and he took us to see some incredible sights. We got a great deal of pictures of Yellowstone--both the otherworldly landscapes and the plants and animals found in the area. We made great time as well--Josh took us to many different sights that we wanted to see, including some that were "off the beaten path," yet it didn't feel rushed at all! Josh was incredibly knowledgeable, not just about Yellowstone NP and its history, but the natural world as well.

Yellowstone Wildlife Profiles was recommended to us by a friend. Our family of 3 booked 3 private full day tours: Canyon/Hayden Valley; Wildlife/Wolves; and Geysers/Hotspots. Our amazing guide was Josh, a Yellowstone veteran with 11 years of experience in the ecosystem. Josh is friendly and knowledgeable…..a walking encyclopedia of Yellowstone history/geology/zoology/botany. We learned so much, had fun, and it was well worth the money spent. We spent 4 days in Yellowstone and left with a wealth of understanding and knowledge thanks to YWP. Great experience! 5 stars!

Brad was great on the phone setting up our day tour. Virginia was our guide for a 7-5pm tour. It was just my wife and I on the tour. Virginia did an outstanding job being a guide, as well as being very well versed in just about anything in the park. Wildlife to geological information she was on it. We didn’t even have to ask, she knew just when to give us education on different sites. I think we hit all the spots in the park that were most beneficial for the time we had because of her. I would absolutely recommend Yellowstone Wildlife Profiles to anyone wanting solid, personal, and educational experiences in Yellowstone.

The enormous sky of Montana is legendary. These vast, open areas are breathtaking, and at night they are much more so. We’ll use night photography to explore areas of the park that are rarely visited by people and will get to experience the park in a completely different way.

As we observe the Milky Way move across the sky, we will also learn about different constellations and stars and the uses they were given throughout history to navigate and tell stories of different cultures. People have been looking at the stars for as long as humans have existed; the ancient practice of stargazing connects us to cultures past and present around the world – and what better place to enjoy the peace of the night sky than in Yellowstone!

The National Park Service started monitoring (and protecting) the night skies within the parks in 1999 after realizing that more than 60% of national parks were affected by light pollution. They started by monitoring the nighttime sky’s brightness at numerous parks, including Canyonlands, Arches, Death Valley, and Organ Pipe National Monument, among others. Today, Yellowstone National Park has some of the most pristine skies in the National Parks system.

With the growth of civilization, the bulk of the populous places in the United States (and around the world) have lost their pristine views of the night sky. We may be able to make out a planet or a few conspicuous stars of a disjointed constellation, but the true splendor of the night sky is lost for most people. The dark skies of Yellowstone provide the perfect opportunity to be awed by truly natural lightscapes and to reconnect with the stories of our past while listening to the gentle bubbling of mud pots, the distant howling of wolves, or the bellows and grunts of bison.

So join us for a truly unique nighttime experience in Yellowstone. Your expert guide is experienced in exploring Yellowstone safely after dark, so you can relax, enjoy, and photograph this wonderful landscape.

We had a fabulous two day tour of the northern range. We were picked up an hour before dawn so we could look for animals at sunrise, which paid off with our getting to watch more than 20 wolves from the Junction Butte pack. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and had the skill of explaining clearly complex geology, ecology, historical topics. Everything about the trip was great and would highly recommend.

Cougar Tracking

December – March

Immerse yourself in the habitat of this mysterious animal with an expert who has been tracking and filming cougars for over a decade.

Cougars (also known as mountain lions) are among the most secretive animals in North America. The best way to learn about them is to search for their tracks in the snow and other sign that they leave behind as they live out their mysterious lives in this wild place called Yellowstone.

Cougar country is rough, steep country. While we can somewhat tailor your experience to your physical ability levels, we are beholden to the territory that cougars call home. Therefore, you should expect to hike or snowshoe (depending on conditions) off-trail over steep terrain with uneven footing.

The reward for your efforts will be a day spent in the beauty of the wild, for cougar country is also some of the most beautiful country to be found. We probably will not spot the elusive predator, but our goal will be to find their tracks and read the stories of their lives in the footprints and other sign left behind. Along the way, you can learn about tracking, cougar behavior and ecology, current research, and the geology and ecology of the landscapes cougars call home.

They are very familiar with Yellowstone and all of the wildlife that lives there. They are very good at sharing their knowledge in fun, comprehensive ways that will help your enjoyment.

Wildlife Code of Ethics

We believe in a strict code of ethics. The animals of Yellowstone face enormous pressure from the sheer number of visitors coming every day to observe them. The park has set forth certain rules that we will adhere to. Mainly, we must not disturb wildlife and we should maintain a good distance to ensure that the animals can carry on with their day-to-day lives and that we stay safe. The current rules include 100 yards from bears, wolves, and cougars (mountain lions) and at least 25 yards from everything else. We appreciate your understanding and so will the animals.
